Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complain about an article in last Monday’s newspaper. “schools fail low-income children.” As the head teacher of one of the largest junior high schools in the city, I feel strongly that the article does not describe our school.
My school has children from many different economic backgrounds, but a large percentage come from lower-income families. Nevertheless, our tests show that the children do well and benefit from the excellent work our teachers do. Last year our school moved from 24th to 5th place according to the official assessment by the state government. This is clearly not the “failure” that the article suggests.
I would strongly recommend that more careful research should be concerned in the future so that your newspaper will more realistically describe the true situation in our schools.
Yours sincerely.

Joan Gonzalez

Motorcycles are fuel efficient. However, motorcycles can be more dangerous than cars, as recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)'s report says motorcyclists are 30 times likely to die in an accident than people in a car.

Below are some tips, especially for few riders to stay safe on two wheels.

Buy motorcycle that fits you.
When shopping for a motorcycle, start with one that fits you. When seated, you should easily be able to rest both feet flat on ground without having to be on tiptoes.
Invest in antilock brakes. Now available on a wide array model, antilock brakes are a proven lifesaver. IIHS data show that motorcycles equipped with ABS brakes were 37 percent less likely it involved in a fatal crash than motorcycles without it.

Use your helmet. Although, helmets are an emotional topic for some riders, they give you optimal protection.

Wear the right gear. Jeans, T- shirt, and sandals are recipes for a painful disaster on motorcycles. Wear yourself jeans, helmet, jacket, gloves and boot for your life safety.

Avoid bad weather. Slippery conditions reduce your margin for error. Rain not only cuts your visibility but also reduces your tires' grip on the road. This can make cornering tricky.

Be ready to roll. Before riding, so a quick walk-around to make sure your lights, horn, and directional signals are working properly.

Mark Thiessen, Associated Press, Anchorage, Alaska Sci-Tech Tue, July 24 2012, 6:15 PM
A new video initiative is bringing the famed brown bears of Alaska’s Katmai National Park directly to computers and smartphones.
Without having to go there, you’ll be able to watch mature bears complete for salmon at Brook Falls and other sites and cubs tumbling over each other as they play. Starting Tuesday, a live Web stream (https://is.gd/bfPAs8) will allow the public to log on and see the brown bears in their natural habitat.
“I think it’s an unparalleled opportunity for people to get that front row seat of the lives of the bears at Brook Camp”, said Roy Wood, chief of interpretation for Katmai National Park and Preserve.
The project is a partnership with explore.org, which set up four high-definition cameras in Katmai, spokesman Jason Damata told The Associated Press. three of them areat existing viewing stands where bear fans come to watch the animals.
The cameras provide access to a national park that is difficult to reach and expensive for most tourists. It is about 275 miles southwest of Anchorage, but no roads lead to Katmai. A trip there involves multiple airplanes and a lot of advanced planning: it’s hard to get a lodge reservation at Brooks Camp before 2014. When   the typewriter was first invented, its keys were arranged alphabetically. This made the keys easy to find. However, this arrangement also caused the bars of the machine to jam, or get stuck.
To solve this problem, a new letter arrangement was introduced by Christoper Latham Scholes in 1872. His system, the standard keyboard system, is still used on typewriters today. He arranged the letters in such a way that as many bars as possible hit the inked ribbon from opposite directions. This resulted in far less jamming than had occured with the alphabetical models.

SNAKES
Snakes are reptiles (cold-blooded creatures). They belong to the same group as lizards (the scaled group, Squamata) but from a sub-group of their own (Serpentes).
Snakes have two legs but a long time ago they had claws to help them slither along. Snakes are not slimy. They are covered in scales which are just bumps on the skin. Their skin is hard and glossy to reduce friction as the snake slithers along the ground.
Snakes often sun bathe on rocks in the warm weather. This is because snakes are cold-blooded, they need the sun’s warmth to heat their bodies up.
Most snakes live in the country. Some types of snakes live in tress, some live in water, but most live on the ground in deserted rabbit burrows, in thick, long grass and in old logs.
A snake’s diet usually consists of frogs, lizard, and mice and other snakes. The Anaconda can eat small crocodiles and even bears. Many snakes protect themselves with their fangs. Some snakes are protected by scaring their enemies away like the Cobra. The flying snakes glide away from danger. Their ribs spread apart and the skin stretches out. Its technique is just like the sugar gliders.

Most of teenagers need to go to school and there are many schools over there. Nowadays, schools grow to offer plenty of choice; private and state ones. However, it is a hard choice since there are many factors which need to be considered before making the decision. Friends will influence some; because some friends go to certain school then we go there too. Some prefer to choose certain school because of the closer distance. In fact, the primary decisive matter for selecting school is whether the school has been accredited or not.
Why is it important to choose an accredited school? Well, accredited schools have an edge over the unaccredited schools. This label of accredited school has impact in employment opportunities. As a result, if there are two or more students with the similar qualifications, the student who comes from accredited school will have an edge over the other candidates. Students from accredited schools have more open door than those from unaccredited ones.
Many students select certain school depending more on short-term factors like friend influence and short distance from home. It is not bad since commuting actually needs much cost. Choosing school, which is closer to home, will save time, energy and money. However, if the school is not accredited, the time and money spent along studying seems to be waste in the long term because it could become a limiting factor in gaining future opportunities.
Accredited school is not the only factor which will drive the student’s success. Personality and characterization are very important too. However, a student with good personality who comes from accredited school is better than those who don’t.

37. What does the text tell us about?
A.    The importance of studying in an accredited school.
B.     The importance of choosing a private or state school.
C.     Some factors influencing students in choosing a school.

E.     Some important factors to get an accredited school.

38. What can we infer from the text?
A.    Friends always become the consideration to choose a school.
B.     Distance always becomes the consideration to choose a school.
C.     Studying in accredited school is the biggest factor of the students’ success.
D.    Studying in accredited school is influential to the students’ success in the future.
E.     Accredited school and unaccredited school are not influential to the students’ future.

39. “…..because it could become a limiting factor in gaining future opportunities.” (par.3)
The underlined word is closest in meaning to…….
A.      Raising
B.      Having
C.      Obtaining
D.      Deriving

A Trip to Snow Mountains

When my family was living in Sydney, we used to go a place called Snow Mountains because Sydney never has snow winter. The weather can get very cold, the temperature could go as minus 5 degrees Celsius. That was the reason why we liked going to Snow Mountains. Our first trip to Snow Mountains was very exciting. We went to Canberra with a group of foreign students from different parts of the world by bus, then we went up to the mountain. And believe me, you need to be an expert driver because the road was rough and wet. We had to go very slowly and cautiously.
Luckily, our driver was a real professional. He did a great job taking us to the mountains, but I saw many good cars sliding off the roads. The police were busy because of those accidents, but they seemed to have anticipated the situations. They had all kinds of equipment to help the poor cars. When we reached the resort area, a nice warm meal was waiting in a nice and warm dining room. It was a relief. Then we had to hire the "Snow-Mountain gear" like caps, scarves, thick jackets, and snow boots. We simply had to do that or we would have been freezing to death. I felt big and fat in that outfit and I had to learn how to walk in snow.
The most exciting part was the toboggan ride. Toboggan is basically a fiberglass board designed to slide down the snowy slopes. So I climbed up the hill and then I sat down on the toboggan. I held on the ropes used to steer and slid down the hill. It turned out that the steering ropes weren't tied on correctly, so I could not control my toboggan properly. I slid down really fast without being able to control where I was going. So I ended up plugging into a freezing cold creek!
