New York, NY 10028
April 17, 2012
The Redaction Team,
New York Guardian Post,
New York, NY 10022.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m one of the citizens of our beloved country. Through this letter, I would like to share some of my thoughts to criticize our governor’s performance.
For the past three years, I think he has been much more talking than acting. Instead of busy sticking up his posters of himself around the city, I really expect he would give attention to water conservation, to plan more trees and to expel street vendors because it’s endangering the pedestrians. He claims he is an expert. But it seems he has no ability to manage our beloved city.
I hope you can publish my letter to bring this problem to the surface.

Your truly,

Andrew Walter

A Crooked General

Once upon time, there was a tall, strong and patriotic young man, called Sit, voluntarily enrolled in the Army in China. He was sent to fight with the enemies in the Southern province.
The General-In-Charge was Chiang. He was a cunning and sly man who would not hesitate to exploit even his own soldiers. He knew Sit’s combat skill was extremely good but purposely put him in a non-combative post as a cook. When it came to battle, General Chiang would send Sit to engage the toughest enemies. Because of his size, strength and combat skill, Sit never failed to kill or capture his enemies. However, Chiang in his report to the king never mentioned about Sit’s victories but claimed all his credits instead. The King rewarded Chiang for his false deeds.

While searching for a stray rabbit in the forest, a huge brown bear suddenly emerged right in front of the hunting party. Everyone fled for his life but the king tripped and fell on the ground.
Just when the ferocious wild bear raised his giant paws to strike at the King, Sit, who was nearby, saw the incidents and immediately threw his big axe at the bear’s neck. The impact nearly severed its head. The king was so grateful to Sit for saving his life and later discovered he was the man who actually defeated all the enemies in the reports, not General Chiang

Nowadays you can see many commercials on TV. Why? Because the TV stations give chances to many companies to advertise their services and products to TV viewers. And it is a fact that every ten or fifteen minutes your favorite programs are disrupted by commercial breaks.
But then, whether we like it or not, TV commercials contribute to consumerism. It means that people who see them intend to buy anything they see; though, they don’t really need it.
You know, there are some reasons why it happens. First, visual advertisements are  presented in attractive ways. They show you how good they use very nice words that persuade people to buy or to use them.
Then, since they are presented in visual ways, people will see what the products or services look like. Besides, models express how delighted they are with the products or services. They try to persuade the viewers that the products or services are very good. This, of course, influences people to use or consume the products or services.
So change your TV channels every time there are commercial breaks. Or you can read the newspaper or magazine when TV stations broadcast them.

Text 12 is for question no. 41 to 43

The issue of using drugs to enhance athlete’s performance is controversial. Those  who agree to the use of drug in enhancing performance say that most - top players in all sports take drugs to train harder and feel no pain during play. The trainers, sports doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapists and managers of the big names make sure banned substances are taken at the safest and most efficient levels. The main effect of banning such substances has been to turn performers and their coaches into liars and cheaters. We should legalize performance-enhancing drugs so that they can be regulated and athletes on the way up - whose entourages do not yet include savvy physiotherapists and doctors - don't overdose and do themselves damage.
On the other hand, some still believe that performance enhancing drugs in sport should be banned. Performance-enhancing drugs are not only prohibited because they violate the spirit of sport but because they can damage the health of athletes. The idea of allowing them in sport could lead to a situation whereby sportsmen and women are used as human guinea pigs for a constant flow of new, unregulated substances. The long-term effects don't bear thinking about.

41.  What does the second paragraph tell?
       A.   The effective and planned sports training.
       B.    The proponents of performance enhancing drugs.
       C.    The agreement of using performance enhancing drugs.
       D.   The main effect of banning performance enhancing drugs.
       E.    The involvement of trainers, sport doctors and nutritionists.

D.   To assure readers that performance enhancing drugs in sport should be banned.
E.    To present point of views about the issue of using drugs to enhance athlete’s performance is controversial.

43.  People agree to use of drug in enhancing performance because ….
       A.   the trainers, sports doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapists use it.

       C.    it is available and easy to get.
       D.   they can train harder and feel no pain during play.

Lovely, competent, and refreshingly straightforward, Frederica makes such a strong impression that to his own amazement, the Marquis agrees to help launch them all into society.
This novel is regency roman. There was a playful, light-hearted feel to this book that, along with the engaging characters, totally charmed me.
At the beginning, the hero was a cynic, and the heroine was a bit too controlling of her family (though always with the best of intensions). When being together, though, they brought out the best in each other. As they spent time together, they fell in love almost without realizing it.
A large number of characters were introduced at the beginning, but their relationships to each other were clear and I was able to quickly sort them all out. The pacing was very good, and the world-building was excellent. The author skillfully wove a lot of details about the time period into the story (helped along in part by a young boy interested in the newest technologies of the day).
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is my favorite historical romance, but Frederica is now my second favorite. If you like Pride and Prejudice, I’d highly recommend that you give this book a try.
